HVA launched new award to recognize "heart safe" places
HVA has launched a Heart Safe Organization Award which recognizes businesses  or other organizations that have met the following criteria for creating a "heart safe" environment:
  • automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in multiple areas and buildings
  • staff training in CPR/AEDs
  • cardiac emergency response plan in place
On May 22, at HVA's annual EMS Recognition Awards Dinner, this new award was presented to:

South Lyon Community Schools
Thetford Corporation, Scio Township
University of Michigan

Honoring community members
HVA also honored several people in the community with Life Saving Awards. These awards are granted to those who have saved or attempted to save a life under extraordinary circumstances or at risk to his or her own life.  The awards were given to:

Carlos Bermeo of Ann Arbor
Tom Garrett of Stockbridge
Michael Seabrook of Jackson
For saving Jim Harlow of Whitmore Lake when he experienced cardiac arrest at Thetford Corporation, Scio Township, in September 2007.

Troy Grantham of Canton (10 years old)
On October 17, 2007, fifth grade Plymouth-Canton Schools teacher Jon Anderson choked on a piece of candy.  When Troy saw that Anderson could not speak, he performed several abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich Maneuver, until the candy was dislodged.  Troy had learned the procedure from his older sister when she took a babysitter class and practiced this procedure with him.  Mr. Anderson and his wife also attended the event to see Troy receive the award.

Carol Rausch, RN
Carol saved the life of  her archery instructor Karl Little when he collapsed from a cardiac arrest.  She performed CPR and used an AED.

HVA employees were presented with professional achievement awards, safe driving awards and other honors.  In honor of Cheryl Kiefer, the HVA EMT who died in the line of duty while saving a life in January, a special life saving award plaque was presented to her family.  Two similar but larger plaques will hang in HVA's main lobby and in the Jackson Community Ambulance support facility.
