ANN ARBOR, MICH. Huron Valley Ambulance
Emergency Medical Technicians Greg Smith and Dale Willett won third place
in the Basic Life Support practical competition at the 2004 Emergency
Medical Services Expo statewide competition, held April 24 in Grand
Rapids. This is the second year this same team has won.
HVA's Jackson Community Ambulance wins two third
place awards in Michigan EMS competition Paramedics
Rick Martin, John Vidolich, and Emily Ward won third place in the Advanced
Life Support practical competition. Rick
Martin also won third place in the written paramedic competition.
Jackson Community Ambulance paramedic Bob Ackley was named Emergency
Medical Technician (EMT) of the Year by the Michigan Association of
Emergency Medical Technicians. Bob’s award was also
announced on April 24 at the 2004 Emergency Medical Services Expo.
The Michigan Association of Emergency
Medical Technicians is one of the major sponsors of the annual EMS Expo,
Michigan’s largest continuing education conference for the emergency
medical profession.
Bob has worked for Jackson Community Ambulance since it began operations
in November 1996 and had worked for JEMS prior to that. He
began as an EMT-Specialist and obtained his paramedic license in 1997. A
resident of Leslie, Bob also works with and volunteers at Leslie Area
Ambulance Service.
At JCA, Bob is known for his hard work. In addition to staffing an
ambulance full-time, he orients and trains new employees; co-coordinates
JCA’s Camp 9-1-1 program, raises funds and organizes events for Leslie
Ambulance; and even plays “Santa Claus” to local children and a few lucky
patients.
“Bob has more than earned this recognition. He works hard and always goes
the extra mile,” states Dirk Borton, JCA’s vice president for operations.

emergency medical profession. Employees from ambulance services throughout
the state compete individually on written exams and in teams for practical
scenarios.
Based in Ann Arbor, Huron Valley Ambulance is a nationally accredited,
nonprofit community ambulance service covering Washtenaw, western Wayne
and southwest Oakland counties. Jackson
Community Ambulance is owned by Huron Valley Ambulance and Foote Health
System, a nonprofit health system based in Jackson. JCA covers all or part
of eight southeast and south central Michigan counties.
