Paramedic (EMT-P) Course

The Paramedic Course is designed for any licensed or certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or EMT Specialist interested in becoming a Paramedic.  Students who successfully complete one of these programs are eligible to take the National Registry examination process required for state licensure.

The 1,016 hour Paramedic course teaches anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, advanced airway management, oxygen therapy, intravenous therapy, cardiology, pharmacology, and reinforces basic EMT skills.  Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) initial certification is included in the tuition fee.  A 120-hour internship is also part of the course (Ann Arbor site only).  New clinical areas include:

  • live intubations in the UM Hospital operating room
  • Psychiatric
  • Geriatric

Internships:

Students will be part of the same ALS team for 264 hours at Huron Valley Ambulance.

Clinical Sites (192 hours of rotations through various departments to master skills):

  • Chelsea Community Hospital
  • Heartland Health Care Center - Ann Arbor
  • St. Joseph Mercy Hospital - Ann Arbor
  • University of Michigan Hospital

Enrollment Requirements:

  • completed Basic EMT course - eligible for licensure
  • high school diploma or G.E.D.

Enrollment is first come, first enrolled.  See the specific course listing for enrollment deadlines.  A minimum number of students is necessary for program operation.  Courses have been approved by the EMS Division of the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Immunization Status (required prior to starting clinicals):

  • current negative PPD-T (Tuberculosis/TB test)
  • proof of Rubella (German measles) immunization
  • proof of Rubeola (Hard or American measles) immunization
  • positive history of Varicella Zoster (Chicken pox)
  • proof of Hepatitis B Vaccine or signed waiver

Supplies (not needed first day of class) - about $75

  • HVA student uniform
  • CPR mask with one-way valve
  • stethoscope
  • watch
  • protective eyewear
  • TB Mask (cost for mask is included in tuition)

Accreditation:  HVA's education division is accredited by the Joint Review Committee/Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP).  In addition to HVA, only one other program in Michigan is nationally accredited.
