HVA Paramedic With PatientStart thinking now about becoming a paramedic and working in the field of Emergency Medical Services.  It's an exciting job which allows you to make a difference!

Healthcare is a good field to work in, and it is probably one of the most stable job categories in southeastern Michigan.  People are living longer and the population is growing older.  Healthcare workers will continue to be in demand, so it is something you should consider.

EMS might be the right career for you if:

A career in EMS gives you a variety of job opportunities.  It is a growth industry which has good pay, good benefits, and flexible hours.  You can work part time if you're in school, and the field has good job security.  EMS also gives you great experience in case you wish to go on to other healthcare careers at a later time, such as nursing, physician assistant or medical school.  EMT's and paramedics work for ambulance services, fire departments, 9-1-1 centers, hospitals (including emergency departments) and more.  Some paramedics go on to become chiefs, healthcare administrators and EMT educators.

If you are still in high school, you should give yourself a head start by concentrating on biology, chemistry, math and computer technology courses.  Or, follow your high schools health career track.

After high school, the first step of your formal EMS education is to become an Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT.  This program is approximately five months long and is offered by HVA as well as community colleges in many counties.  After completing EMT school you will need to take a state exam and becoming licensed by the Michigan Department of Community Health.  Once you are an EMT, you should strongly consider continuing your education to become a Paramedic.  A paramedic education course is about 12 months long and includes classroom and clinical training in hospitals and with ambulance services.

Throughout your post-high school education, stay fit because EMS is a physical job.  Also, a good driving record is important along with no alcohol violations.  Finally, no drug use is mandatory - all EMS employers drug test before hiring and during employment.
